PiYo: Week 2 Review

This week was a rough one, but only because I had some family stuff come up that I allowed to interfere with my workout schedule and my nutrition plan.  Overall I'm disappointed in myself, but I'm not going to let it get me down.  I'm heading in to week 3 with a renewed sense of commitment and a meal plan to help me stay on track even when unexpected things come up.

The workouts that I got in were awesome!  I feel so much stronger, I'm modifying less moves, and  finding it a little easier to get through routines (easy is a bad word but you can see how red faced I am in my photos!).  My favorite is still Sweat.  I'm not quite sure why other that I get a really deep stretch and I always feel invigorated afterwards.  My least favorite thus far is Core, but that is to be expected given that I have a lot of "belly" to lose.  Its a rough routine, but I definitely felt the aftermath (in a good way!).

Day 8 - Sweat
Day 9 - Define: Lower Body
Day 10 - Rest Day
Day 11 - Define: Upper Body & Core
Day 12 - Rest Day (scheduling)
Day 13 - Sweat
Day 14 - Rest Day (family issue)

Here are a couple of the clips that I taped.  This was the first time I've recorded myself doing some of the workouts and I think it's going to help me physically see my progress on top of what I'm feeling.

At the end of week 2, I was at a +/- 0 lbs. for the week.  I'm glad I didn't gain weight considering my nutrition wasn't on point like it needed to be.  My results had nothing to do with the program.  With the changes I've planned for week 3, I'm looking forward to getting back in to the groove!

PiYo: Week 1 Review

So I'm going to start off by saying I'm not a complete newbie to PiYo (If you missed my introduction to this program, click HERE).  I've done both Define workouts before, but I never truly committed to the program.  I don't really know why because I really do LOVE it.  I feel so amazing after each workout and my love of this program has only deepened as I committed to completing the 60 day calendar not only for the swagalicious shirt shown below, but also because I really wanted to commit to making the change with a structured plan.  Does that mean everything goes 100% as planned?  No, but it gives me a blueprint to work from and that will help!

I started the challenge on Saturday, April 11 and I don't quite know what got in to me.  I woke up and was just tired of being exhausted and overwhelmed all the time.  It was now or never and my commitment to PiYo began just that quickly!  Like I mentioned before, I have done a couple of the workouts before so this time I skipped Align: The Fundamentals.  Keep in mind that typically the 60 day calendar starts with that workout.

Day 1 - Define: Lower Body
Day 2 - Define: Upper Body
Day 3 - Sweat
Day 4 - Rest Day
Day 5 - Define: Lower Body
Day 6 - Define: Upper Body
Day 7 - Unplanned Rest Day (scheduling mishap!)

So far, I will say my favorite workout is Sweat!  I can't do every single move and on moves that I can't do right now, I just follow the modifier.  So far, I feel awesome.  I'm getting some minor aches (from riding a strict desk job for 5 1/2 years!), but I'm able to get them to subside using Deep Blue Rub from DoTerra (click the name to get transferred to my rep's site).  I swear by that stuff!  Other than that, I've already had a reduction in the number of headaches, knee pain, and lower back pain that I was suffering from before.  At the start of the month, I transitioned back over to our family business and have been much more active at work.  I'm amazed that in such a short period of time, I can feel differences.  I'm able to move much more comfortably in general, my posture is already much better, and overall my core feels stronger.  I can't wait to finish up week 2 and see how I feel!

At the end of week 1, I'm down 1.4 lbs!  Not a ton, but completely worth it with how much better I feel already!

Interested in PiYo? I'm doing a group challenge starting May 4th!  PiYo de Mayo will have Mexican flare with healthier recipes including a skinny Margarita (...or two!).  Join me!  Contact me to secure your spot or get your challenge pack right away by clicking the ad on the right side of the page.

Shakeology Sunday: Orange Dream

Ok I know what everyone is thinking...all I do is talk about Chocolate Shakeology!  Well I thought I would switch it up and offer a really tasty Vanilla Shakeology recipe this week.  It's one I love even more now that the weather is warming up and I'm looking for that extra boost of Vitamin C to start my day.

The key to this recipe is the fresh squeezed orange juice.  If available, buy it at your local grocery store.  If it isn't available, try your hand at juicing and only use store bought OJ as a last resort.  Make sure you check the label though!  Lots of store brands have hidden sugars and other additives to make them taste "better" and to allow for a longer shelf life.

Here is how to start your day with an Orange Dream:

4-8 oz. Water
4-8 oz. Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice (our local grocery store does this on site)
1 scoop Vanilla Shakeology
add ice to taste if desired

Then shake in your favorite shaker cup or blend (especially if you add ice).

Enjoy this ray of sunshine to start your day off right!

May Challenge Group: PiYo

PiYo (pronounced pie-yo) is one of my absolute favorite programs and I want to share the love with you. Are you looking to get more flexibility, open your mind, and center your inner self? PiYo is the way to go!

Developed by my favorite trainer, Chalene Johnson, this program the combines muscle-sculpting and core-toning benefits of Pilates with the strength and toning benefits of yoga.

This amazing program requires no additional equipment. Just YOU! Scared because you aren't as "bendy" as you think you should be? There is a modifier for you to follow if needed so this is ideal for any skill level. The workouts are short so anyone can do them, regardless of a busy schedule or a house full of kids, and it is easy on the joints. No heavy weights or jumping involved so you do not have to worry about high-impact moves that will be hard on the knees.  The program is completely low impact, but will deliver results!

My next PiYo challenge group will be starting in May 4th and I will only be taking 5 participants (either challenge pack is required and includes a 60 day exclusive challenge group on Facebook).

Contact me to reserve your spot today or click the graphic in the right bar to get your challenge pack right away!

AND: if a healthy lifestyle wasn't enough to motivate you, you'll also be entered in a giveaway to win a $25 gift card if you join by 11:59pm cst on April 27th!

PS - I'm currently doing the 60 Day PiYo Challenge myself.  Stay tuned for a Week 1 update next week!

PiYo Workouts

As previously mentioned, PiYo workouts are a combination of influences, which include yoga, Pilates, strength training, cardio and core training, all combined into one 25 to 45 minute workout set to a fast pace. They were created specifically to help you obtain the long, lean muscles, toned abs, firm buttocks and defined arms that yoga can help you achieve with the benefits of a fat torching, sweat inducing cardio workout as well. The movements in the videos are fluid so there is little impact on the joints. Even so, you are constantly moving for the duration of the workout to keep your heart rate up at an optimal range to burn the maximum amount of calories. The eight workouts plus the bonus workout that come with all three PiYo packages include:

Align: The Fundamentals (40 minutes)
Align is an all in one workout that helps you understand the correct form required to perform each of the moves in the PiYo program.

Define: Lower Body (25 minutes)
Define: Lower Body focuses on the thighs, calves and buttocks. It works every muscle in your lower extremities, including your hamstrings and quad muscles.

Define: Upper Body (35 minutes)
Define: Upper Body will help reshape your arms by focusing much of the moves on your shoulders, biceps and triceps. This workout will also work your chest and give you upper body strength that most feel is unattainable without weights.

Sweat (35 minutes)
This faster paced workouts that works every muscle in your body. It includes a lot of yoga influences done at a dynamic speed to help make you burn calories and sweat for the entire 35 minutes.

Sculpt (30 minutes)
Sculpt will work your muscles at different tempos to keep challenging them. You will feel the burn as you go through each exercise and hold positions to challenge your endurance.

Core (30 minutes)
Working the core is vital in achieving a long, lean physique and that is exactly what this workout does. It will help you obtain the flat abs that so many hope for. All moves are designed to lengthen and strengthen the midsection.

Strength Intervals (25 minutes)
This non-stop interval workout includes various movements done at a fast pace to help burn the maximum amount of calories. It works every muscle in your body and will get your heart rate up almost immediately.

Drench (45 minutes)
Drench will take you through a warm up and stretch of your upper and lower body, then quickly transition you to a fast paced, cardio portion to bump up your heart rate and speed up your metabolism. It will culminate with a lower body segment to help improve endurance and balance in your legs and core.

Buns (Bonus Workout 25 minutes)
This program is designed lift your buttocks and redefine your entire backside with a variety of moves that also work the legs and thighs.

Hardcore on the Floor
This workout is available only if the program is purchased through a Beachbody coach. It is an all-body workout designed to strengthen every muscle from head to toe and can be added to days that you are doing other workouts in the series for increased intensity.

Other Products Included:

PiYo Workout Calendar
With the PiYo workout calendar, you will know exactly which workout to do each day of the week for the 60 day duration that you are doing the program. It will have you do one PiYo workout each day of the week for six days with a rest day on Fridays. I personally started my program on a Saturday so my “rest days” fall on Tuesdays.  During the first month on the program, PiYo focuses on improving form, alignment and overall strength. By the time you reach the second month, you will see that PiYo increases difficulty by incorporating longer workouts and more whole body workouts each week. If you still have weight to lose and goals to reach, you can extend the program and continue it for an additional 60 days.  The “fuchsia” calendar is a great place to start, but if you are looking to amp up your strength training with the additional strength program, you’ll follow the “aqua” side.

PiYo Quick Start Guide
The PiYo Quick Start Guide will help you start the program as soon as you receive it. It will give you a brief breakdown of the workouts and nutrition plan, along with tips to help you obtain the best results.

Tape Measure
The tape measure will help track your progress throughout your 60 day journey with PiYo. The scale is not an accurate representation of the results you will achieve since muscle weighs more than fat. It is important to take measurements of various parts of your body while doing the program to see how it is helping to burn fat away and build muscle.

Accelerated Strength Workouts
The Accelerated Strength Workouts included in the PiYo Strength DVD package are intended to bump up the intensity of the program for those that want more. Incorporating them along with the other eight PiYo workouts will help deliver faster, better results by adding additional workouts to your 60 day cycle on the program (the “aqua” side of the calendar insert).

Yoga Mat
The yoga mat is available as part of the PiYo Strength DVD package and can also be purchased individually through Beachbody. I highly recommend a good mat to help reduce pressure on your joints and to help you hands and feet “grip” the floor.

Beachbody Strength and Slide Booties
The Beachbody Strength and Slide Booties will give each workout a boost and help make the moves more challenging. They can be purchased with the PiYo Strength DVD package or individually through the Beachbody website.

30 Day Supply of Shakeology
Shakeology is included if you purchase PiYo through a Beachbody coach as a Challenge Pack. I credit a lot of my results to incorporating Shakeology in my meal plan.  It contains a fantastic blend of superfoods and nutrients that would cost hundreds of dollars if you tried to get this nutrition through other supplements.  Shakeology can help you lost weight, reduce junk food cravings, increase your energy, and improve your digestion and regularity.

30 Day Trial Membership to the Team Beachbody Club
As a member of the Team Beachbody Club, you will have access to all of the tools, support and accountability you need to succeed with the PiYo program. You will also have additional benefits and access to Beachbody products that include a 10 percent discount on future purchases, meal plans personalized to your fitness goals, access to live chats, videos, tips and recipes from your favorite Beachbody trainers, your own personal coach for guidance and support (aka me!), access to message boards and chat rooms to help introduce you to others on the same fitness journey, and Beachbody on Demand!  The club membership and the access to Beachbody on Demand will gain you access to well over $1000 worth of programs and their corresponding nutrition plans/calendars to help you continue your health journey.  If you choose to continue your membership beyond the 30 days, you will be billed $38.87 on a quarterly basis.

Shakeology Sunday: Peanut Butter Cup (or Tagalong Cookie) Inspired

Peanut butter and chocolate are two of my favorite things on earth so it was important to me to try to fill that craving somehow.  Since I started drinking Shakeology, my cravings are down, I've seen better weightloss results, reduced my bloating, and seen higher quality/faster nail and hair growth.  I can't live without my morning shake!

This has been my "go to" recipe since I started drinking Shakeology about 8 months ago.  Here is my magic formula for a liquid peanut butter cup (or Tagalong cookie for your GS cookie addicts!)

Here is how it is done!

Blend or shake up:
8-16 oz. cashew milk (or other dairy or nut milk)
2 tbsp. PB2 (or natural peanut butter)
1 scoop Chocolate Shakeology
ice to taste (optional)

Enjoy!

Recipe Favorite: Crockpot Salsa Chicken

All you need are 2 ingredients to make this slow cooker shredded chicken -- good salsa and chicken!  Our current salsa favorite is the Simply Balanced Organic Roasted Restaurant Style Salsa from Target.  You can use this chicken for tacos or you can make your own burrito bowls.  Whatever you want!  I've listed a few ideas for things to serve it with below.

Ingredients:

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 16 oz. jar favorite salsa

Directions:

Place chicken breasts in a slow cooker and cover with salsa. Toss until the chicken is covered.

Cover and cook on high for 4 hours (or low for 6-8 hours), or until the chicken shreds easily with a fork. Shred the chicken in the slow cooker and toss with the remaining salsa and juices until well-mixed. Serve immediately, or refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 5 days (or freeze!).

Additional Suggested Items for Serving (options are limitless!):
  • Flour or Corn Tortilla
  • Hard Taco Shells
  • Cheese
  • Lettuce
  • Additional Salsa
  • Lime Wedges
  • Guacamole

Focus on Goals: Vision Board

I'm a huge fan of goal setting and to help me focus over the last year or so I've used a vision board as a huge part of that process.  I typically update it quarterly as I complete goals or decide that I need to change them based on where my life now.

A vision board is a tool used to help clarify, concentrate and maintain focus on a specific life goal. Literally, a vision board is any sort of board on which you display images that represent whatever you want to be, do or have in your life. Most often you'll see this done using magazine clippings affixed to poster board or tacked to a cork board.  I prefer to create mine digitally and I have been using PicMonkey to create it.  My digital version then becomes the desktop image on my computer, but you can also use it as the wallpaper on your phone or print it to hang it in your office.

Why do this? Simply put, we are bombarded by distractions on our computers, television, cell phones, etc. Using this type of tool can help you focus on what is important to you including:

  • Helping identify your vision and give it clarity.
  • Reinforcing your daily affirmations.
  • Keeping your attention on your goals.

Finally, another key purpose that vision boards serve is to help you stay focused. It isn’t difficult to start each day with a positive attitude – until you get out of bed and start dealing with life around you.

Regardless of what happens in your day to day life, your vision board is a constant reminder of where you want to be. This speaks to you on both conscious and subconscious levels, a vision board is one of the best tools toward keeping your mind focused on your goal, your attention on your goals, and your life headed in the direction YOU choose.

Here is a glimpse in to my 2015 Vision Board the I just revised for the second quarter of my year.  I always list some shorter term goals along with some longer term ones.  I personally only choose about six areas to focus on, but you can choose fewer or even more if you want!  Remember...it's all about you!

Shakeology Sunday: Thin Mint Inspired

I'm having one of "those" times of the month where I'm deeply craving sweets.  I can pass up a lot of things, but my vice in the realm of sweets is actually cookies.  I already know I can't live without my Shakeology so I thought I would combine the two!

While unlike most people I'm not a Thin Mint addict (more of a Tagalong person myself), I do enjoy them periodically so I thought I would experiment with a recipe that has gotten passed around quite a bit and make myself a "healthy" liquid Thin Mint!

Here is how it is done!

Blend or shake up:

8-16 oz. cashew milk (or other dairy or nut milk)

up to 1 tsp. Pure Mint Extract

1 scoop Chocolate Shakeology

ice to taste (optional)

It really does taste like a Thin Mint cookie!  This recipe will definitely stay in my rotation!  Stay tuned!  I'll share my "go to" recipe next week which is (surprise surprise) Reese's Peanut Butter Cup (yum my favorite!) or Tagalong inspired!

Enjoy!

Recipe Favorite: Crockpot Fajitas

Ingredients:
3-4 chicken breasts (Frozen)
4 cloves of pressed garlic
2 tsp of chili powder
2 tsp cumin
1 Tbsp. cilantro
4 bell peppers, any color (sliced)
1 large onion (sliced)
1 14 oz can of diced tomatoes (Low sodium if you can find them!)

Instructions:
Put all ingredients in the crock pot (chicken down first) and cook on low for 8-10 hours or high for 4-6 hours.  You can slice the chicken or leave them whole and shred the chicken with 2 forks.

If your time will allow it, add the bell peppers to the slow cooker in the last hour so they aren't too soggy. When the cooking time is over, shred chicken with a fork.

To Serve:
Place 1 Red container of the chicken mixed with tomatoes and garlic onto a whole wheat flour tortilla. Top with 1 Green container of sliced peppers and onion. Optionally serve with 1 Tbsp. of Non-fat Greek yogurt, a blue container of shredded cheese or a blue container worth of avocado, i.e. 1/4 avocado (or mix them).

1 fajita is 1 red, 1 Green, 1 Yellow and an optional blue.

Weekend in Review - March 20-22

For the first time in ages (or forever if that song is stuck in your head), Mario and I did not have an over-scheduled weekend.  I can't remember the last time we had so much free time!  It was awesome!  So here is a run down of how our weekend went with a few photos along the way and links for more information.

To see photos as I take them, join me on Instagram and if you would like to see my restaurant, hotel, and attraction reviews see me on Trip Advisor

Friday

We did not do anything really special on Friday except I had to do some work for my fathers business which I've been doing every Friday night for over a year now (doing work I've been doing since I was in undergrad) which will be changing soon as I make the transition out of my current job and into his business full time starting next week.  It's going to be an adventure and a challenge, but I'm looking forward to the opportunities that it could create.  More about that later...

Saturday

After relaxing a bit (wait what is this?), we headed to the Chicagoland Family Pet Expo with a friend.  Though we did not find as much as we usually do, we did see a really interesting K9 law enforcement training demonstration.  Usually we unload too many funds finding fun stuff for our furballs, but there wasn't nearly as much this year.  The only real "find" was this amazing clothing company called Peace Love Paws Co.  Not only are their designs lovely, but their mission is truly admirable.  I picked up a signature purple hooded shirt and I have a feeling its going to the first of many pieces that make their way in to my wardrobe!

After the expo, we had a little downtime before we headed to a local restaurant/bar called Spears to see my husband's cousin and his band, Miles Over Mountains.  Mario is related to Steve, the bassist.  MOM has a bluegrass/Americana/jam band type sound and the show was a blast.  There were quite a few of us there to support the band and this was the first time we had seen them play.  Luckily they had their CD release party the night before so we were able to take a recording home.  For the first time in a while, I enjoyed a nice glass of Moscato and we closed out the bar that night talking away with some cousins we hadn't seen in a while.

Sunday

We decided that Sunday would be a nice relaxing "date day".  I actually woke up early (my cat needed his insulin shot) and I booked our FP+ reservations for our May trip to Walt Disney World along with rearranging some of the dining reservations that we had already booked.  I couldn't believe it, but we actually got some great plans with only some minor adjustments and reservations for all of the restaurants we wanted to try this time around.  We are Disney Vacation Club Members and have been for a few years now.  Our actual "home resort" (where our timeshare is based) is Animal Kingdom Lodge - Kidani Village, but we are working our way around the resort trying different locations.  So far we've stayed at Saratoga Springs, Animal Kingdom Lodge - Kidani Village, and we stayed a couple of nights at the Grand Californian at Disneyland as well.  This trip, we managed to get reservations at Wilderness Lodge which is perfect for our preferred proximity to Magic Kingdom for this trip.  We were crossing our fingers that there would be another 24 Hour Day this year and we super excited when it was just recently announced.  After our plans were set for May, we were also able change resorts for our September trip for the Epcot Food and Wine Festival to Old Key West also for proximity reasons for the event.  I'll do another post on our Disney Vacation Club membership at a later date to help explain the "ins and outs" of how we plan our WDW time.

Fridge Figment was hanging out right below my reminder to get these planning tasks done for our trip!

In the meantime, here are some photos from our short trip this past November.  We stayed at Animal Kingdom Lodge and attended Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party.  It was a blast and a much needed get away!

Spaceship Earth at Epcot

Tree of Life at Animal Kingdom

Sorcerer's Hat (since been removed) at Hollywood Studios

Cinderella's Castle (frozen over by Elsa) at Magic Kindom

We managed to get a lunch reservation at Be Our Guest for lunch.  We tried the grey stuff.  It was in fact delicious!

Magic Bands and Party passes!

Our last night all decked for the holidays complete with our Santa "ear hats".

We relaxed a bit longer, got a bite of lunch, and headed over to the movie theater to see Insurgent.  Out of all of the dystopian series that are out, my husband actually likes The Divergent Series the best.  It surprises me, but it makes it easier to get him to go!  Since we had a gift card, we splurged and saw it in IMAX 3D.  I'm not normally big on 3D and quite frankly it normally makes me nauseous, but I survived.  I thought it was well directed and it was engaging, but the overuse of CGI was distracting.  I did enjoy it though.  They've done a great job casting for this series and I can't wait to see how they tackle Allegiant (which they are splitting in to two movies like every other final book).  It actually got me motivated to pull out Four: A Divergent Collection again.  It's the only book I hadn't read and I really want to finish it.  I read the Divergent Series over the course of about a week prior to the first movie being released.  If you want to see my ratings for those and other books because I'm a bit of a bookworm as well, connect with me on Good Reads.

After the movie, we had to go do some major grocery shopping.  Our freezer was already well stocked (even with some dump meals and pre-prepped meals), but we were very low on all of the fresh fruits and vegetables that we needed for some of the recipes we wanted to make this week.  Lately we have been really bad about pre-planning meals and cooking at home.  Since our schedules are changing, we are going to have more time (which should never have been an excuse) and are making meal planning a priority.

Lots of yummy fresh produce!

So Sunday night, I made the Turkey & Quinoa Taco Bake that I already posted the recipe for.  This time I added a can of Diced Tomatoes (no salt added) and I included extra peppers, onions, and garlic.  I don't typically bake it with the hot sauce, but we add Cholula to our own bowls to taste when serving.  Since the recipe serves 4, this gave me two extra meals pre-made for the week!  As we continue to meal plan, we are planning meals that create extra servings so that we have meals to bring for lunch on the go.

The finished product after baking.
